Human rights violations in Iran

    Since the elections in June 2009, the conditions of human rights in Iran appear to have worsened. The state of human rights in Iran has been criticized both by Iranians and international human right activists. 
    Among the main problems in Iran there are torture and mistreatment of prisoners, executions, (carried out with methods such as stoning), also of juveniles, lacking freedom of speech and press and suppression of religious or ethnic minorities. Since people, media and governements concentrate on the question of nuclear energy, ongoing human rights violations seem to pass into silence. It was not until the conflicts in June 2009, that the world seems to have remembered that other problems such as violations of prisoners, lack of clarity during legal proceedings, threaten of relatives and other kinds of violations exist. 
    Officials of the Islamic Republic have responded to criticism by stating the IRI is not obliged to follow "the West's interpretation" of human rights," and that the Islamic Republic is a victim of "biased propaganda of enemies" which is "part of a greater plan against the world of Islam."
